Architecture, The 50th World Theatre Day and a Diva's voice - 27 March

Ok - now can I possibly join in a coherent fashion: Mies Van der Rohe's, World Theatre Day, and a heart warming vocal presence by our very dear Ella Fitzgerald?

Well let us see if I can possibly manage..


This is a day that saw the birth of a man that among few wielded tremendous and profound influence on XXth century Architecture, in fact it is an influence that can still presently be felt.

Having passed it on a daily basis for some years, one of the Mies I most recall
is this (If you "click" on the picture you can see it in full)

As an architect I believe he needs no introduction so I'll cut to the chase and go straight to an "unfinished" work - his Theatre Project.









Speaking of Theatre, as it is also the day that marks the 50th World Theatre DaY

International Message by John Malkovich
On March 22, 2012, John Malkovich will deliver his international message at UNESCO in Paris at a gala event that will include readings of play excerpts with Malkovich and other theatre artists.

I'm honored to have been asked by the International Theatre Institute ITI at UNESCO to give this greeting commemorating the 50th anniversary of World Theatre Day. I will address my brief remarks to my fellow theatre workers, peers and comrades.

May your work be compelling and original. May it be profound, touching, contemplative, and unique. May it help us to reflect on the question of what it means to be human, and may that reflection be blessed with heart, sincerity, candor, and grace. May you overcome adversity, censorship, poverty and nihilism, as many of you will most certainly be obliged to do. May you be blessed with the talent and rigor to teach us about the beating of the human heart in all its complexity, and the humility and curiosity to make it your life's work. And may the best of you - for it will only be the best of you, and even then only in the rarest and briefest moments - succeed in framing that most basic of questions, "how do we live?" Godspeed.

John Malkovich is a founding member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company and has worked on 33 productions with the company since 1976. In 1983 he won an Obie for his performance in Sam Shepard’s True West. The following year, he appeared with Dustin Hoffman in the Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman, which earned him an Emmy in 1985 when it was made into a television film. He rose to fame in cinema with his interpretation of Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons by Stephen Frears, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Glenn Close. After this role he acted in more than 70 movies internationally, receiving Academy Award nominations for Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire and playing a version of himself in the films Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. He has periodically returned to Chicago to act and direct, and was recently seen in the international tour of The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a serial killer. This production traveled to nearly 20 countries and received its New York premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in November 2011. He also directed his third theatre production in Paris, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, at the Théâtre de l'Atelier following the success of Hysteria (2002) and The Good Canary (2007) for which he was awarded the Molière Award for best staging.

If I am to believe in angels then I can't help but believe that she came down for a while unto this "stage", just to check things out..

Este artigo é na verdade "dois".. Primeiramente, e já de seguida, é sobre assuntos internacionais. É uma mensagem urgentíssima, e que surge agora. Está colocada aqui neste Blogue para dentro do que me é possível ajudar para que seja difundida o mais rápido e eficientemente possível.
O segundo assunto é sobre uma questão nacional - o empobrecimento e/ou o acabar de instituições públicas relevantes no panorama cultural no nosso país. Neste caso refiro-me ao Clube Literário do Porto.
Incluo uma petição "online" que alguém teve o cuidado em fazer e que agradeço. Na esperança que a leiam e assinem, agradeço, já agora, também e antecipadamente.

At the bottom of the post I address the impending (incomprehensible) closing of an important

O “Lucro” é algo que se define consoante os padrões (ética, estética, moralidade e/ou ausência da mesma.. )
de quem o o deseja.

Há lucros que pouco ou “nada” são.
Outros que são faces fragmentais da destruição e/ou do empobrecimento do Ser que os cobiça.
Há lucro que é e/ou conduz às coisas da Morte

Yes a handful of us in any given place can be rotten to the core.. will profit from the death of babies and laugh as one’s own mother’s back’s is broken.. but most are not so.

It takes a coward to succumb to Averice, Greed and Fear
(all foods of Hatred and Destruction, that awful couple that fathers “Doom”)

- but the noble heart shall shine through the darkness of those who would do him/her ill or attempt to cheat.

The cheating of the Other into becoming as they, a small worthless empty shell from whence no sound escapes nor light for they are “Naught”, where all is but deception -
- is as vile an act as the destruction a few desire to perpetrate for the lucre of “false” gold;
for a “profit” they hysterically believe they can take with them.. to that small black hole they’ll inevitably end up in…

Long life to those whom are free of such flaws that would imprison their Humanity, who are invigorated through the beauty of coming to the rescue of the Other
(and themselves),
- through LOVE.
May they prosper and multiply.

Van Gogh - athletes covered by flowers - finally authenticated (Descoberta nova)

This article is regarding a painting that has taken some years to finally be authenticated.
After almost a decade of searching fot the correct answer, through the aid of "Macro Scanning X Ray Flourescence Spectrometry"
the mystery has been solved. The mystery regarding the "athletes /wrestlers" the painter had spoken of to his brother in a letter is finally unveiled and the painting has been "found" officially.

Foi acrescentado mais um quadro à obra de Vincent Van Gogh: “Natureza morta com flores do prado e rosas”, é uma pintura em óleo que foi feita por cima de uma outra, da autoria do artista, que representava dois homens praticando luta livre. As flores do prado e rosas de Van Gogh estarão expostas a partir desta terça-feira, primeiro dia da Primavera, na Holanda.

A autenticidade deste quadro foi colocada em causa desde que chegou à colecção do Museu Kröller-Müller, naquele país, em 1974. O facto de a tela ter um tamanho invulgar e de a assinatura ser anómala foram apenas dois factores que contribuíram para que o quadro fosse, em 2003, catalogado como tendo sido pintado por um “artista anónimo”.

Agora, nove anos mais tarde, uma equipa de investigadores da Universidade de Antuérpia (Bélgica), da Universidade de Tecnologia de Delft (Holanda), do Centro de Física de Partículas de Hamburgo Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), do Museu Van Gogh (Holanda) e do Museu Kröller-Müller (Holanda), confirmou finalmente a autenticidade do quadro.

Van Gogh terá pintado inicialmente os dois homens praticando luta livre em 1886 durante a sua passagem pela Escola de Belas Artes de Antuérpia. Porém, chegado a Paris, decidiu pintar a natureza morta por cima desse tema. Fê-lo directamente, sem cobrir com tinta branca o tema anterior.

Os historiadores descobriram em 1998 que os atletas, descritos por Vincent ao seu irmão Theo numa carta, tinham ficado escondidos por debaixo de uma natureza morta. Porém, só agora, com recurso a análises químicas e a um scanner especial (Macro Scanning X Ray Fluorescence Spectometry) é que foi desfeito este mistério.

O Museu Kröller-Muller, que está instalado no meio de um parque natural, no centro da Holanda, alberga a segunda mais importante colecção de quadros e desenhos de Van Gogh a seguir ao museu com o nome do artista, em Amesterdão.

A natureza morta agora atribuída a Van Gogh mede um metro por 80 centímetros, um tamanho grande e pouco usual na produção do artista.
