Toots -

photo credits: still shot from 'Night of The Proms' video clip - LINK

Some people come into the world, Love incarnate. You can feel it, hear it, see it, sense it - with all your senses as it gurgles, trickles, or gushes out of them (and whom they are with).  They can't help it, it's just the way they are.

Those that fall into this category, that I'm lucky to have had shared my life with, and others - even when (perhaps even especially when) impatient, or in a bad mood for any reason, just take your heart because it's theirs to take.

There is so much soul in them, it oozes out of every pore and it seeps into you with no barrier; glues you to life even after they've gone.

This is a definition of LOve incarnate.

Toots was definitely that kind of person.

♥

March 29

I heard this not long ago and instantly knew I would post it this day, not only as a present that I would leave for someone extremely special to me, who can no longer receive gifts (though I leave it as such, whether he can or not. I, and others know how it would warm his soul to hear it), but because it's beauty also touches me, profoundly.

It is a sunny, warm day; the sea calls in all its blue splendour, so I shall go sit next to it.
(wishing all who should pass by this post a lovely day).

There are things that live on throughout the ages, seldom enterprizes, logos or stocks & bonds, but Art and arstistic achievement (the kind that creeps into your soul and finds there its home, whether it be on an individual or a collective level).
Since the dawn of time tribes are overrun and dissappear, empires fall, we are physically born and die, but an artistic gesture (the kind that moves you whether it be: the Cave of Hands / A Cova das Mãos / Cueva de las Manos - in Argentina, Os Cegos by Júlio Pomar, Rodin's hands.. or any other by any other) is eternal like few of Mankind's things are, a mirror to the individual's or collective's soul, in transformation and transforming us from within.

Having thus said, I leave you with a piece written and arranged by a friend, performed by a number of them, where one can feel such a gesture reflecting through an art form (whithin the stylistic currents of  jazz, european jazz in this case),
that besides bringing to heart & mind those very friends (and through that path to another so very, very precious to me eventhough not directly involved in this lovely project, and who like one of the soloists on this precise recording is no longer on this plane of existence),
- nourishes my inner being (and makes me more human).

Goodnight.

Julian Priester - Jazz / composer / educator

_
image from - www.healdsburgjazzfestival.org

Here are two of the many recordings I enjoy with Julian Priester who has shared the stage and performed with so many other outstanding musicians.

This great musician has unfortunately fallen ill and unfortunately, unlike many nations throughout the world the US thoughout the decades after the UN's 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights has not provided its citizens & general public with a health system as Canadians, Cubans, Portuguese, French, British ... and so many countries do (eventhough currently the IMF and EU seem bent on policies that shall perhaops destroy all our "public health care" systems .. too much profit to be made off of people's sickness it seems and I'm so very sad to say).  This is an attempt to provide what our countries should guarantee all  citizens in all lands - health care.
It hurts to see such that a such a rich country (not only in terms of wealth) should have problems like this.

I thus leave you with the above link truly hoping his health can be recovered and that he live a long life.  I am in no way a relative or collaborator in any of his projects. In no way do I propose to reflect with my thoughts and words those of Mr. Priester or any of his loved ones.

This is not just an issue of hoping that the public may perchance come to the aid of one whom has given so much to all of us through his art and taught so many, this is a moral issue regarding basic human rights that we all deserve .  For this reason I shall catalogue this post also under "Human Rights".
Indeed if this is such with one whom is known so well, having such a long carreer and having performed with the likes of  John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock and so very many more as a sideman or with  ensembles under his own name   (I'll mention a few more of the many with whom he had collaborated: Muddy Waters, Dinah Washington, Bo Diddley, Max Roach,Clifford Brown, Sonny Stitt, Freddie Hubbard, Blue Mitchell, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Charlie Haden, McCoy Tyner, Sam Rivers to mention just some)  - than it should not be difficult  to  imagine the majority of people in that land, the staggering number and their hardship precisely at vulnerable times when their only worry should be to get well..

I'm baffled that even with such oustanding & wonderful carreers such as Priester's, having taught so many, in a profession that makes us more or less visible even if we are not football/soccar stars that we should need to ask for something that all deserve as a basic human right.
I'm appalled that President Obama's noble quest for giving his nation "public health care" is always  slammed and sidetracked by conniving crooks who hide in large corporations that take so much profit in the hardship & suffering of others (they care not if any of us die, not even those of us who have recorded & performed so much for so many to hear and warm our souls to.  An "artist" after ceasing to exist keeps warming our hearts though their ouevre but I need not justify the reason anyone should have that basic Human Right to the best health possible, all of us, every man, woman and child deserves that

- I quote Article 25 of a declaration written in 1948 - Paris, France:

"Article 25
Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection." .

By the way and still on the subject of major talent,
also born this day

a man who's life was tragically cut short at the age of 25)
- here performing one of my favourite jazz standards is bassist - Scott La Faro.

Here's another standard with Scott, one I learned to play years ago at the request of someone very close to me and to whom I dedicate this post.

Kirk Lightsey - February 15th, 1937 - A happy day for Music / 15 de Fevereiro. Um dia a celebrar

A beautiful human being I've had the extream pleasure and fortune to have met, I leave you with a sample of the great man's work.
I may be biased out of a strong sence of friendship for he's truly admirable, but the music leave's no doubt and is testament of his wonderous talent.
Here is a short playlist with some of my favourite recordings of his available on Youtube. Go ahead. Enjoy.

Have a lovely day

(oops, didn't I mention some of the people that have shared his stage?? How thoughtless of me! Here are the names of a few: Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Betty Carter, Harold Land, Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker, James Moody, Clifford Jordan, Sonny Stitt, Rufus Reid, Benny Golson, Pharoah Saunders, Don Cherry..)

Miles - 20 years...

20 years ago today he left. He also left a tremendous legacy..
Thank you Miles.

I originally wanted to select 5 recordings but I'm afraid I was incapable of choosing less than 14.

I place here in separate the recording that I personally feel to reflect his inner persona from his own perspective.
Jack Johnson, as is well documented, was an inspiration and someone with whom he highly identified with. For this reason if I had to choose but one (impossible when dealing with certain musicians) this would probably best serve "my mind's eye" as I try to define and reflect his inner being, though I'm certain it only reflects a fractional portion.

In truth for any one working in the arts their entire ouevre reflects their being, emotions and thought along with people and things surrounding them. Therefore my list is in effect useless to reflect the man.
- I thus place 14 here.. fully knowing their should be more.

(video of the first track in the album - Jack Johnson)
Musicians in this track were:
Miles Davis – Trumpet
Steve Grossman – Soprano saxophone
John McLaughlin – Electric guitar
Herbie Hancock – Organ
Michael Henderson – Electric bass
Billy Cobham – drums

The following (some of which were turning points in the history of Jazz in my humble opinion) are some of my favourite Miles Davis recordings. Besides the afore mentioned work (above),  these are to me of high significance.

One of his many facets was the challenge he put upon others to work at his side whether it be in performance or composing. He was truly what one could call a Music "Medium" or channel if you will. He had that rare uncanny sense that few have for percieving talent in others in such a way as to instantly capture, captivate and entice into action at the highest degree of one's capabilities.

I thus begin the list, which is in no way in any specific order but rather randomly put forth as I run through my memory, with "Aura".

Aura
- although Miles was a prolific composer, either recording and/or performing various pieces written by his friends and colleagues or music of his own along with the habitual list of jazz standards, in this case he went to Palle Mikkelborg to author the tracks on this album.

"Intro" – 4:48
"White" – 6:07
"Yellow" – 6:55
"Orange" – 8:41
"Red" – 6:05
"Green" – 8:13
