Um Workshop - inscreva-se. "A realidade versão circense"/ Coming soon - Reality (sign yourself up)


In an age of a confusing of  'Boundary' and  'Definition' we come to an apparent standstill, to a world

full of the appropriation of  Symbols made by others that we wish to use so as to reflect that which we want others to see us as 'Being'.  Although it is true that mankind has always built 'Invention', found its artistic/creative inspiration by building on work  made by predecessors, this seems different.
It's true and we know all about the age old custom of composers, for instance, paying tribute to or inspiring each other by incorporating "musical quotation" or "reference" in their work  (Mozart<>Beethoven; Liszt<>Kagel; Peixinho<>Stockhausen;   Machaut's "Messe de Notre-Dame" on a cantus firmus;  Dufay, Ockeghem, desPrez, Palestrina and others on the "L'homme armé" secular song for their masses. Heavens! Don't even get me started on Bach..   ).

No, I'm referring to something else. This new age has wondrous things as all ages do (especially to the eyes of those who are contemporary to them) but just as everything and anything, it is a two-way street - good and perverse. This age of mass (speedy) communication that ironically also brings an increase in  incommunicability is also (by default if you will) an age of free appropriation of anything..
Moreover, even for those who are accustomed and wish to make sure that a source or an author of that which is taken - to be known, is many times overwhelmed
(for a variety of reasons, in a sheer rush of speed and receiving a gargantuan-size amount of information).

In some aspects we seem to have returned to a quasi permanent state of adolescence where one bears the markings of one's "tribe" or teen-age - teenybopper type trend (mask).

All dressed in an attire of labels and gimmicks where the core meaning (if there is one) seems to this author as being rather lightweight (in most instances).

This is a trend in which no one has to risk revealing their own 'expression' (some may think), where the Arts are "smallened" and/or banalized  (Pop Art for example).
 Art &  Architecture are still bringing us their Neo-this and Neo-that into our Neo-Liberal world but it is a world that no longer retains the reality that such artistic movement relates to.
From around 2001 or so, something else has declared itself as being "fully grown" or "Post-postmodern" if you will.
It has been co-existing with that late in dying out trend - so full of sarcastic cynicism typical of that which we call "Postmodernism" (of the Post-hippie & Post-punk movements); a movement that seems to have dealt that  final blow to 'ideology' and the 'grand-narrative'.

Even champions of "individualism" such as Satre in later years professed the notion that it is not an individual or his/her personal freedom that matters but rather that of the collective; or rather that no Man is free unless all of Mankind is.


As the wall came down roughly 20 years ago and money began to freely circulate (just as people), I think the world jumped directly into its next stage in Capitalism
- Capitalism went global and seems to have become an "Eastern" thing.
- We have thus come to that Neo-liberal world of the sceptical Postmodern Man who's superficial "reading" of reality as he/she poses: ironic, fancy, toying phrases - to vainly show how clever one can be without ever really wanting to address core issues, easily manipulated and/or brainwashed through tools such as those of Corporate media and such. Elections are thus fixed, money easily laundered and money... it knows no boundary nor owner.

How can Mankind be free, or democracy survive in such a world?

"Money" owns, manipulates, moulds and takes hold of public decision with incredible ease as Free TRade Agreements and EU Treaties bring false economic growth through cheap slave labour.

Countries lose exports and strengthen imports (economies) of places that employ under slave labour conditions.

Those that Govern have different price tags and seem increasingly incompetent so as to enable this kind of phenomena. They are all "gift wrapped" and "sold" to us all shiny and nice though elections in a make-believe democratic rule.

No wonder Postmodern Man makes but half-witted jest and easy parody.
He/she has no time to think at all
and the will is to keep everyone in a superficial state of civic "numbness" where criminal corporate and/or political behaviour not only is unaccountable, but even promoted.
Fines when applied are tiny compared to profits from such conduct and it seems criminal activity is thus rewarded even - by its victims (all of us).

We're force fed the idea that there's going to be a difference between this or that alternating political group.   So called specialists mimic and repeat, as they bombard their schizophrenia type "reading" of what they invent to be reality  (some on purpose and others not) or what they're told to repeat
Just turn on any Television set and watch most news casts, hosts or commentators.
If some of what goes on in the world were not so tragic they would be right up there with the best in terms of comedy acts.

Speaking of the East, China has become a full fledged "Postmodern type nation"
- Despite their obvious atheism, apparently, they've passed a law prohibiting reincarnation.

As it seems, said law states that one is only permitted to re-incarnate upon attaining the government's explicit authorization to do so.
(I still have a hard time writing this without tears running down my cheeks in laughter, and obviously if one thinks of the reason behind such a ridiculous law, all smiles drop and a deep sadness comes over us as one recalls the reporting of  millions of Tibetan deaths as China still attempts to control "body & soul" - or clean away any opposing forces.  Of course, one must also bear in mind that this is what one is told in most of our western media, and our media has been known to slander or misconstrue certain things on occassion.. And frankly eventhough I feel compassion to whomsoever must flee their land, I'm never comfortable when I don't see -  two sides of a coin - so to speak)
...... ....... ..

Ok.

Back to the end of the grand narrative (all the "isms" such as State Communism & Capitalism that insanely hurls forth seems likely to explode/implode soon)


Left / Right ideology makes no sense any more and are irrelevant to this world. They are non operational.

I think i'm going to enlist in some intense reality classes, I'm probably not seeing straight (no matter how much I enjoy the humour I keep feeling that this is what has been happening in this new - postwall - era)

I've never trusted banks they always want our money (even before we earn it and it's been that way since the 80s.  I also seem to remember that since the 70s when countries such as the States feel a bit short on cash, they just say "what? we need more cash? ok - make some more."
I don't know about you but to me, if you keep making money that doesn't exist, something is bound to happen.  .......but ah, what do I know? )

These two projects have a common goal:
- to stretch the boundaries of the definitions of Music and Art (Fine Art). In an era of “Globalization and “Anti-Globalization”, the members of these projects seek both perspectives; through the merging of Art forms, and concurrently through expressing themselves via their own inevitable ethnological idiosyncrasies. Futhermore, this is done within the musical perimeters of jazz, contemorary, "world music", and visual abstraction for the most part.

Simul-Arte and Díptico – GGTP are projects born from the joining of two artistic modes of expression
Music & Fine Arts (in this case painting).


Their origins are based on:
– Performances where live painting and music converge, and share the
same stage. (i.e. ‘Cruzumana’ – w/ Guida Almeida)

– And musical performances for Painting Exhibits by Graça
(i.e. Paleka, and Carlos Azevedo)

For the same reason that in some parts of the world, the definition for “ Music ” encompasses simultaneously Dance and Music,
- these people propose to search for another rendition for the term, one comprised of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) and Music.
- to find an object's SMI "simultaneous multiple interpretation"

In truth, the inspiration for performing simultaneously within both realms, among other reasons, comes from several years of rehearsals and respective performances in which musical ideas, for one reason or another were expressed pictorially (ex. “Gog” – w/ G. Almeida and others).
- These were cases in which standard notation was insufficient in order to covey musical concepts. This became evident in previous musical projects involving Guida Almeida. These projects (such as the previously mentioned “Gog”), difficult to define musically (being a single or mixed compost of: Jazz – Fusion – Acid etc. / and Contemporary Music – Serial – Minimalist – etc.) for the most part involved among others – Paleka, a versatile and talented drummer, along with other musicians.
The other mentioned musician - Carlos Azevedo - is a talented artist and thus has freedom to move within the project as a plastic artist an as a musician.

Graça is an experienced and thrilling painter, having worked for the film industry (European) for approximately 30 years. For her, Visual Arts are not in the least bit limitted to painting or sculpture. She has also on occasion painted live, along side Guida Almeida (Art Centre – Estoril, Portugal). Some of the musicians in these projects (Carlos Azevedo, Paleka) have frequently performed at her Art Exhibits. Her work, along with that of Guida Almeida (Costa) can be found in numerous public and private collections.

All of the mentioned members (Carlos Azevedo, Paleka, Graça and Guida Almeida) have a strong sense of alliance to one another. Hence as they perform, they act as accomplice to each and all as they work together in a tightly knit fashion.

Musically, most of them come from a rich background in Jazz and/or Contemporary Music, two being prime examples for contemporary jazz from a small and ancient European nation, Portugal.

Thus the terms: “Simul-Arte”, for simultaneous art movement
and “Díptico – Grupo Geral de Trabalho e Pesquisa” (which roughly translates to “ Diptych – Comprehensive Group for Work and Research ” ), for the twofold - artistic endeavours.

Painters Graça and Guida Almeida are the performing visual artists for both projects; whereas  Carlos Azevedo or Paleka are responsible for music in “Díptico-GGTP”.
* Carlos Azevedo may also be involved as a Plastic Artist.

Este é um projecto novo inspirado no espectáculo a solo musical de Carlos Azevedo, e na pintura executada ao vivo integrada nesse concerto musical (G.Almeida).
Este grupo tem como objectivo ampliar o conceito de música ()ao apresentar-se em duo ou em trio intitulando-se
– Simul-Arte –

- Dentro deste tipo de trabalho existem tambem os conjuntos – Díptico GGTP – que têm sevido de uma maneira ou de outra como fonte de pesquisa às artistas Graça e Guida Almeida.

Graça tem dedidado mais de 25 anos da sua vida ao cinema, e tem uma maturidade como artista plástico inegável. Ela tem tido o apoio destes músicos a actuar nas suas exposições e tambem tem pintado ao vivo com Guida Almeida (Arte Centre).
Guida Almeida tem um passado a actuar com estes músicos e eles são frequentemente fonte da sua inspiração plástica (inclusivamente tendo ela recorrido à intervenção plástica durante ensaios para efeitos de pesquisa, e por veses em concerto – ex. “Cruzumana”).
 Há uma forte relação de cumplicidade entre os todos (tal como o há com os restantes músicos mencionados no projecto Díptico-GGTP).

Do mesmo modo como haverá locais em que a música e a dança são uma só arte e não duas separadamente, este ensemble – Simul-Arte – , tal como os do Grupo Geral de Trabalho e Pesquisa – “ Díptico”, tem como base a junção das artes visuais e a música – (teremos muito gosto em dar mais detalhes sobre este processo).

Entre outras coisas este projecto pretende o alargarmento do conceito (ou uma possível alteração no conceito)
de Música. Poder-se-á dizer o mesmo em relação a Arte (Artes Plásticas), conforme a
perspectiva Músico / Artista Plástico.

Para reforço deste objectivo recorremos em certas ocasiões, consuante o espaço, à arte cinematográfica (projecção). Embora, como verá na descrição de actuações que enviamos junto a esta carta, esta última não seja uma componente obrigratória na nossa intervenção, ela não deixa de ser um factor a ter em conta,
e por vezes relevante, para uma maior envolvência da parte do espectador.

Esta tentativa de alargamento de conceitos ( Música / Arte ) da nossa parte é através de uma contínua pesquisa para uma visualização da música (ou busca de um dos seus possíveis códigos visuais, para além da simples escrita), e vice-versa.

Este projecto tenta ter em conta a componente cultural (identificação sócio-cultural) dos artistas intervenientes independentemente destes serem músicos ou artistas plásticos.

Esta nossa actividade entre outras coisas tambem é, conforme os intervenientes, a nossa forma de exprimir o impacto que tiveram alguns vultos do nosso meio musical (citados na – “ Descrição de Espectáculo” dos eventos por nós sugeridos) – são pessoas que marcaram profundamente a vida de alguns dos intervenientes dos agrupamentos: Simul-Arte e Díptico GGTP.
